1960 Ford Fairlane owned by Beatniks member Dennis McPhail of Wellington, Kansas. In 2010 Dennis told Kustoms Illustrated that he had been chasing the Fairlane around Wellington for 16 years before he was able to buy it. He first saw it on the streets, driving around on the day he applied for a job at Halibrand Wheels.[1]

Wichita Style

Being from Kansas, Dennis wanted to restyle the car in an early 1960s Starbird/Wichita style. Darryl Starbird's Predicta was the main inspiration for the build.[1]

Restyled by Hooligan Hot Rod

The floorboards, lower quarters and the rocker panels had to be replaced before Dennis began restyling the car. Hooligan Hot Rods of Wichita was commissioned to slice 9 inches out of the width of the roof and move it forward, making the quarter windows shorter, giving the car a "coupe" like top. Hooligans also nosed, decked and shaved the car for trim and door handles. The gas door was also welded shut, and the hood received porthole scoops. Multiple frenched and tunneled antennas were added to the body and dash. The rear wheel wells were radiused and fleared to match the front wheel wells. The rear fins were extended by 2", and the front fender peaks were extended by 1.5".[1]

Body and Paint by Jeff Myers

Jeff Myers at Premier Body and Paint took over the build after Hooligans.[1] He molded the taillights and grille opening before a custom made floating tube grille by Clay Melton wasinstalled. The hood corners were also rounded before Jeff painted the car with a custom mix of "House of Kolor" and Sikkens lacquers. The body consisted of House of Kolor laquer with clear, over light purple metallic, single stage Sikkens base. He gave it a traditional fadeaway paint job. The top and dashboard was painted white pearl with Metalflake. The dash was then pinstriped by Blaine "BlaineO" Scott.[2]

Stardust Upholstery

The interior and headliner were upholstered in pearl white Naugahyde in a tuck & roll style. The work was done by Stardust Upholstery. Plush black carpets were used on the floors.[2]

Dennis fit the Fairlane with custom ordered chrome reverse 15 inch wheels from Rally America and Hankook radial tires. The engine and transmission, a 289 and a C4, was taken from a 1967 Ford Mustang. The chassis work was performed by Clark's Hot Rod Repair.[2]

The 2010 Grand National Roadster Show

The build was completed in 2010, and the same year Dennis won the "Early Full Custom 55-64 Class" with the Fairlane at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California.[2]

Sold to Jerzy Saganowski

In September 2011 Dennis sold the Fairlane to Jerzy Saganowski of Park Ridge, New Jersey. As Jerzy is using a wheelchair, the car went straight to a disability vendor to have hand controls installed. Power brakes were also installed before Jerzy got the car back in November 2011.[2]

Tour Bus Accident

Jerzy drove the car locally for a short stint before he on December 3, 2011 took it to New York City with a pal. Near Madison Square Garden a tour bus plowed into Jerzy while he was parked on the street.[2]

Rebuilt by Jeff Myers

Jerzy had barely put 100 miles on the car when he was hit by the bus. In the Spring of 2012 the car went back to Jeff Myers in Kansas where it was completely rebuilt and restored over a 2 years period. During the rebuild Jeff also installed a Vintage Air air condition unit and hidden tiny front turnsignals. Jerzy got the rebuilt car back in June of 2014.[2]

Sold to Andrew D. Krauss

Jerzy has been a quadriplegic since 1990, and as he is deteriorating physically the car was now longer practical for him to use, so in 2016 he decided to advertise it for sale. In May of 2017 he sold it to Andrew D. Krauss of Lansdale, Pennsylvania.[2]
