Inside Hot Rodding: The Tex Smith Autobiography

"Inside Hot Rodding" is the autobiography of LeRoi Tex Smith. LeRoi was a writer, builder and racer. Born in Oklahoma, Tex was of Cherokee heritage. He moved to California in 1941, and In the 1950s he served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. During this service he got to know Wally Parks, NHRA founder and Hot Rod Magazine editor. Tex had a passion for all things automotive, and spent his spare time tinkering with hot rods. When Tex finished his military service, Parks offered him a job at the National Hot Rod Association. Later on, in 1957, Parks did also offer Tex a job in Hot Rod Magazine.[1] Working for Hot Rod Magazine in the 1960s, he played a fundamental role in the establishment and growth of the automotive publishing industry. In 1963 Tex won the Americas Most Beautiful Roadster award with his experimental "XR-6." He went on to help found Street Rodder and Rod Action magazine, and he worked with promotion of the NHRA. In the 1970s Tex was also involved with the birth of the Street Rod Nationals, all the while he was a hands-on hot rod builder, completing many project cars of his own that influenced other hot rodders all over the world through his countless how-to articles and specialist books on the hobby.[2]


Published by Graffiti Publications, the 256 pages hardcover book was released August 1, 2015. Unfortunately, Tex passed away June 11, 2015. Inside Hot Rodding reveals many stories never before seen in print, together with dozens of photographs from Tex's own collection that have never been published. Not only is it [[LeRoi Tex Smith's life story, it is a unique insight into the very heart of hot rodding on an international scale.
