Ted Mitchell

Leroy Kemmerer's 1956 Mercury of Castro Valley, California. Leroy's Merc, also known as The Jade Idol, was restyled by Gene Winfield of Winfield's Custom Shop. The build was started in 1958, and completed in 1959. The Jade Idol became an instant hit at car shows all over the US, and it was the car that helped Gene gain national recognition as a custom car builder. Ted helped Jerry Rehn restore the car in the 1908s.

From his teenage years, Ted Mitchell harbored a dream to become a mechanic. He embarked on this path by undertaking ambitious projects, such as transplanting a 1941 Cadillac limousine engine into a 1940 Chevrolet Business Coupe. His early endeavors were driven not by monetary gain but by a pure love for the craft.

Acquisition and Restoration of "Hazel"

In 1986, Ted's automotive journey took a significant turn when he purchased a 1957 Chevrolet, affectionately named "Hazel," from the Hoge brothers in Gilroy. The car, initially in primer gray, was poised for transformation. Ted dedicated two weeks of vacation to begin its restoration, a process that eventually spanned a full month. This meticulous restoration took place at Rod Powell’s renowned shop in Salinas, California.

Legacy and Exhibition

Ted's dedication to Hazel extended beyond the restoration. He actively participated in numerous West Coast car shows, including the esteemed Hot August Nights, sharing his masterpiece with fellow enthusiasts and inspiring future generations.
