Four-Banger is hot rod slang for a four-cylinder engine, most famously the Ford Model T and Model A inline-fours that powered early hot rods. Before the V8 took over, young rodders in the 1930s and early 1940s hopped up these reliable little engines with speed parts like Winfield carburetors, high-compression heads, and overhead valve conversions. Though modest in output, a well-built four-banger could hold its own on the dry lakes and drag strips of the era. Today, vintage four-bangers remain popular among traditionalists building period-correct gow jobs and early-style rods.
